What can you buy with €100 these days? Still a lot. One of them is the Nokia 7230. Expect it to fetch much lower with carrier discounts with a good chance you can get it for free on a short contract. Nokia took out many of the frills we've come to expect from a full-featured mobile phone to bring this handset to a wider market.
Does it offer value for the money? Well, if you don't frequent hotspots for internet surfing, then you won't mind it not having a WiFi. If you don't do a lot of internet browsing and just be content with a good-enough 2 mbps downloading speeds on the 3G minus HSDPA/HSUPA, then this entry-level Nokia mobile phone offers a lot for the price.
Not only does it perform the basic tasks of a competent mobile phone, it's quite pretty on your hands. With a choice of two colors - graphite and hot pink, you have an elegantly compact phone measuring just 98 x 46 x 14.75mm and weighing just 100g. It's got a fashion sense to be easy on the eyes and easy on you hands. At its €100 price without taxes and subsidies, it's easy on the wallet as well.
Hardware Features at a Glance
- The Nokia 7230 mobile phone is a basic quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and a tri band 3G/UMTS. There's no 3.5G HSPA data connectivity or WiFi. But there's high speed Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR. There's no A2DP support but you get a 3.5mm headphone jack that accept just about all the headphones on the market.
- It has a modest 2.4-inch LCD TFT screen with QVGA resolution and just 256k color support. Imaging is supported by an entry-level 3.2 megapixel fixed focus camera that does the job without flash. But you get QVGA video recording at a good-enough 15 frames per second for that sudden urge to capture a video of a fleeting moment.
- There's no GPS but your handset gets preloaded with Nokia Maps 3.0 so you can navigate manually. Internal memory is not much at 70 MB but you get microSD expandability for up to 16 GB. There's a 2GB microSD card that comes with the sales package.
- Its 860 mAh lithium ion battery will get you 27 hours of musical listening, 5.4 hours of talk time and 15 hours of standby time on 2G networks, 3.7 hours of talk time and 16 hours standby times on 3G.
Software Features
Running on an older Symbian S40 OS, you get an Opera Mini browser, WebSearch Midlet, Google Talk, Windows Live support and Nokia messaging. Its multimedia players support the popular image, audio and video file formats and supports video streaming as well. You can have access to the Nokia Music store and get to upload your videos to Ovi Share. There's an FM radio and games like Snake III, Bounce II, Sudoku II and Rally Start which should perk you up in boring moments..
Eco-Friendly Besides
The Nokia 7230 is an eco-friendly as many recent handsets claiming to have a stake on saving planet earth. Nokia claims its body uses nickel-free materials that contain on PVC, flame retardants, Brominated compounds, chlorinated compounds and antimony trioxides. The packaging box comes from 100% recycled pulp. There's a power saving mode on the phone that alerts you to unplug the battery charger after it's done. The device itself is 80% recyclable.
