If you are looking to upgrade your "relic" of a TV to a new age LCD, then you may want to check out the Samsung LE40A856. As another manufacturer that has jumped on the colored bezel bandwagon, Samsung offers a hint of red around the out bezel, but unlike other manufactures, the panel is only 85mm thick. This allows it to be mounted nearly flush to the wall, which is great for those that want a quality TV that will not be the main focal point of their room.
With Samsung's SRS TruSurround XT sound effect system, sound quality on the LE40A856 is good when it comes to TV watching, but leaves something to be desired when watching movies. Dialog sounds good, but the LE40A856 does not seem to provide much in terms of volume level. Even at high, it is not really loud, and sounds somewhat flat. If you plan on utilizing the LE40A856 for more than just TV viewing, make sure you invest in a quality surround sound system. Otherwise you will be quite disappointed in your movie viewing experience.
The Samsung LE40A856 offers Full HD 1080p resolution is a much slimmer package than its 40 inch counterparts. The LE40A856 provides brilliant color and deep detailed blacks with the help of Samsungs DNIe Pro technology which results in great picture quality every time. Samsung has also includes its 120hz picture processing which reduces image judder. With this technology the LE40A856 provides more frames which helps reduce motion blur.
If you still utilize Freeview, make sure to switch out of dynamic mode, otherwise you will be sorely disappointed with sub-par picture quality. As soon as you adjust the picture settings you will be quite pleased with the LE40A856's video performance.
The LE40A856 offers users 4 HDMI inputs, three are located on the back and one has been installed on the side for quick and easy plug and play access. There are also 2 SCART inputs as well as a built in USB port that can be utilized for Wiselink Pro.
Samsung offers two unique features that are built in to the LE40A856. Samsung offers Wiselink Pro and Infolive. Wiselink Pro allows you to view photos, videos and play MP3s stored on a USB device directly on the LE40A856. The new version of Wiselink even allows you to play DivX and XviD formats. The LE40A856 also removes the need to turn on your PC just to check your stocks or get the newest update on the weather forecast. Infolive utilizes the built in Ethernet cable on the LE40A856 and can receive RSS feeds from Yahoo to display news, weather and stock values, which is great for those times when you just want a quick update during the commercials for your favorite TV program.
Overall the LE40A856 provides great picture quality but average sound quality. Dialog performs well, but don't expect the LE40A856 to provide the neighbor irritating sound levels when volume is on high. Performance is great if you are only planning on using it for basic TV viewing, but will require a surround sound system for quality performance when watching movies. If your goal is quality video performance for your daily TV watching, then opt for the LE40A856. Any more than that and the LE40A856 is not the way to go.
